Redigera effektivt i Photoshop –
arbeta smartare, inte hårdare

(01)

(02)

ARBETA EFFEKTIVT I PHOTOSHOP

Talk at Fotomässan 2015 – ‘THE ROAD TO CREATIVE IMAGES THAT EVOKES EMOTIONS’

~How to make your creative images more interesting~

The interest was greater than ever when I walked onto the big stage at Fotomässan Stockholm in November to talk about the road to creative images that evokes emotions, not only showing technique or surface. There were people as far as I could see (< 300) and the energy was amaaazing. Maybe I also got some extra umpf from the little baby inside my growing belly 🙂 Now you can watch the entire talk online (opens in a new window at Moderskeppet)!

Do you feel sometimes that your photos are looking good and are technically great, but they miss that little something extra…?
Do they really tell anything to anyone??
What can you do to make them feel more interesting and evoke more emotions, both for yourself and for your viewers?
And is there a good way to keep that inspiration flowing and not rely on chance?

The best part of it all is not only being able to share my passion and love for creative storytelling with so many people, but also the chats I get to have afterwards individually with you guys. The photo fair is such a great place to meet up with people you’ve only had the opportunity to write to online before, and it was truly awesome that a bunch took my advice from my newsletter and reached out beforehand that they were going to be there. So we decided to meet up and talk about our shared interests and I got to hear a bit about YOUR images and why YOU create. Also, I’m stoked about all the spontaneous chats from all you guys that were inspired by the talk who came by afterwards with so many fantastic questions and thoughts. I hope to meet you all next year again!

I hope you did/will do the challenge I gave you at the end of the speech?! If you did (I already got some fabulous images sent to me from people who did!), I would love to hear about it in the comments below this post and I’d love to give you my feedback.

Talk at Fotomässan – METHODS FOR CREATIVE IMAGE STORYTELLING

Talk at Fotomässan – METHODS FOR CREATIVE IMAGE STORYTELLING

Create images with strong storytelling

I entered the big stage at Fotomässan Stockholm in November and you can now watch the entire talk online (opens in a new window at Moderskeppet)!

How do you tell a story in a creative image? Why is it important with a location scouting library, what symbolizes different colours in different cultures, and how can a single piece from nature build an entire story?

A big audience of about 300 joined me when I shared why and how image storytelling is so important and has gotten such a big place in my heart (and yes… you are correct… I was on the verge of tears there for a while…). I talked about 5 tools you can use to help you create and adapt your story. Lastly I gave you an exercise you can use if you find it difficult to get going with your own storytelling. And of course I couldn’t help to spice it up with some anecdotes from my photographic adventures as well!

INSPIRATION FOR IMAGE CREATORS – How to get inspired again and again..? Reflections from my latest teaching class

INSPIRATION FOR IMAGE CREATORS – How to get inspired again and again..? Reflections from my latest teaching class

~I headed to Fotoskolan Göteborg this week for a full day to talk and teach the class about creating images.
The day before I got interviewed by Moderskeppet about my work and I got the question how I approach ‘inspiration’,
and if I wait for it to happen before I start to create or if I just start creating, hoping that inspiration will come?
And what I do if inspiration doesn’t come..?~

And it hit me. As professional photographers we just can’t sit around and wait for inspiration to pop up by itself. What quality work could we deliver to our clients if we aren’t doing inspired work!? So… what can you do to get inspired, again and again?

“When doing my talks I love if my story inspires the students, but most of all I want to push them to start thinking about their own journey and why they love and started shooting from the start. A talk about me is… well… not about me, not really… I’m more like a channel into themselves. So instead when leaving at the end of the day I hope for the person who I just met has gotten some insight about who THEY are as image creators.”

Artist talk notes - Jenny Jacobsson

So during the talk I let them answer some important questions that I’ve blogged about before, 5 essential questions as photographers. To remind ourselves what we actually love about photography, and also to keep pushing ourselves to do even better, be even better. This time I added the question “What environment and under what circumstances do you love to shoot in?”. Because answering those questions about inspiration myself I started to think about how important it is for us creators to just not sit around and wait for a magical moment to happen to us. I feel that instead we have our own destiny in our hands and we should expose ourselves to things that challenge us, that get our mind going, that inspires us. And what that is, is something we actively need to work on finding out.

I’m a firm believer that feeling inspired is a state of mind that you can teach yourself to find when you need it. It might not be easy, and sometimes we fail. But instead of just sitting around waiting for it, if we know what normally inspires us, and know what we like in an image, it is easier to go after it.

“So, what can we do to get started? First, I believe that you should start analyzing your own images. What do you like in the ones you like, and what is it that you don’t like in those that you don’t?”

Is it a specific light at a specific part of the day, or maybe a certain type of location, or maybe a special connection between people? You can also look at other people’s work and contemplate the same things. Start to write down the things that you do like. And answer those 5 (or 6…) questions as well. And as you go along, you will probably will be forming a statement of what you really really enjoy and like to create in your own work, and where.

Inspiration by the sea - Jenny Jacobsson

“Once you’ve started to figure out what you like, it’s time to get moving. What do you think will happen, lets say, if you love shooting by the sea with the salty wind against your cheek and you love the breeze of seaweed… if you go out to the sea every now and then, compared to sitting inside at home in an air conditioned environment? What do you think would inspire you more?”

Maybe it’s time for us creators to leave our computers behind sometimes and just go put ourselves in the circumstance of what we love to shoot. If you find out that you love shooting food, a good idea might be to dedicate some time to cook something beautiful for someone you care about. Maybe sit down in the kitchen of someone else who is a great cook and just smell, feel, and taste what could be in front of your lens. Or lets say you are all into storytelling. Maybe sit down, all alone with headphones, with your favorite music album and listen through it. Not just through one song, but the entire album, and visualize the story told from beginning to end. Or have a long conversation with your grandma when asking her about a story from her youth. Or….

If you are like me, I love the connection between man and nature. I know that I almost always gets an idea for an image if I go out for a walk in the forest or by the sea. So that’s why I truly need to dedicate time to go out there a few times a week, to let those thoughts fly. To actively go out and search for my inspiration. And if I’ve got an assignment I always go out and try to find and indulge in that special location for that shoot, to get that inspiration flowing.

Artist talk - Jenny Jacobsson

Lastly, I want to lift the questions out of the classroom and ask YOU. Do you know what gets you going? Do you have any great tips for getting your inspiration on? My tips are just the beginning and not the full answer to being inspired.

Please share your tip with the community in a comment below and maybe we can help inspire each other to  get ourselves actively inspired.

Love,
Jenny

5 essential questions as photographers – Artist talk at Fotoskolan Göteborg

5 essential questions as photographers – Artist talk at Fotoskolan Göteborg

I was invited to do an artist talk at Photography School Gothenburg (Fotoskolan Göteborg) yesterday and together we wrote down answers to five questions. When working and living as a photographer sometimes it can be difficult to try to stay true to your own visions and keep your creative pride, thinking that you need to create something else because you feel pressured to. I strongly believe that if you are not true to your own creative vision and pride, you will soon start to resent the work that you used to absolutely love. And also, I’m a firm believer that as long as YOU love what you create, there will be lots of others out there that do as well.

To remind ourselves what we actually love about photography, and also to keep pushing ourselves to do even better, be even better, we ask ourselves these questions. Questions that we can go back to and rethink over the years, in constant evolution, to move forward, but still remind ourselves of where our true love for photography once started and what our core values are for the images we create.

WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? | Remind yourself of that magic moment, or those magic images, that ones pushed you to start shooting.

THINK OF 3 THINGS THAT YOU LOVE IN AN IMAGE | Try to as often as possible incorporate those 3 things in your own images, to keep your voice and to create consistancy in your work. May it be a color, a subject, a location, an emotion, a genre…

IF YOU HAD NO LIMITATIONS, WHAT WOULD YOU PHOTOGRAPH? | If money or relying on others were no issue, what would you create? Is there anything you can do, right now, that can make you go out and shoot something similar, or even more awesome?

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE BETTER AT/STRENGHTEN YOUR PORTFOLIO WITH? | As photographers we need to constantly evolve and push ourselves. Right now, what can you do to evolve?

AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR DAYS DOING? | Working as a photographer, we do not only pick up our cameras and photograph all day long. We need a focus as a business and spend our days creating more than photographs. For you, do you want to be hired by a company, sell prints, do exhibitions, do assignments, write a book, work for a magazine, teach…?

Face fusion

Face fusion

On Monday we at Fotoskolan Göteborg got the neat task of taking a portrait of oneself and a classmate and then in Photoshop fuse them together into one new person. I loved the challenge of using a proper blonde to contrast my own brunette type. And I couldn’t resist to create two new persons instead of only one.

So… behold… the Montage sisters!

The upper images are the two versions with the faces fused and the lower images are the originals. For some reason the sisters looked a lot younger than our original normal selves. Hm…

Levitation

Levitation

And so it was time to answer the next question from my dear readers, and this one is from the delightful Anders Bergkvist, who wrote me a comment in You ask, I tell – The Force of Nature where he wondered “How did you create the levitating impression of your first Flickr Explore image?” (above).

THE PROBLEM

If you’ve ever tried to make a proper jump you probably noticed that it’s difficult to get some distance from the ground at the same time making it look relaxed and without pulling your face. Unless you are perhaps a trained dancer or gymnast. And trust me… I’m certainly not…

LEVITATION AND MONTAGES

Levitation can of course be created in several ways. Like in all photography a good goal to create a realistic effect is to always capture as much as you can in camera, and try to avoid unnecessary manipulation. Since our mind and eyes are really good at noticing if something fishy is going on and if light and shadows don’t add up, it’s quite hard to put a montage together and there are a lot of things to be considered (more about that in a future post).

If I had been graceful enough (and believe me, I’m not) I would have performed this little jump and at the same time managed to pose and turn my torso slightly to create the body shape I was after. I tried, but I can assure you you wouldn’t be pleased with the result.

IMAGES NEEDED TO BE SHOT

Although for this shot I was a bit lucky, or at least I made it quite easy for myself since I didn’t want to levitate beyond belief. I just wanted to take off a little from the ground, like I was floating away. So I needed to shoot images with:

1) stretched legs and pointed toes

2) the shadow on the ground created by the jump

3) the upper body, relaxed and twisted the way I wanted with the face also relaxed and eyes on the ground

PHOTOSHOP PROCESS

After having shot two kinds of shots, one where I took a little jump trying to create good legs, and one kind where I was happy with my upper body, I opened my files in Photoshop. The two images that I’d chosen was put in two different layers on top of each other. Since the upper body layer needed to be placed a bit higher to match my waist, I moved this layer upwards until it fit (you can see how much I moved it in the 2nd image below if you look closely, on the line between the floor and the wall).

When this was done, I hid the “bad legs” from the upper body layer by painting black in my layermask, revealing the jumping legs from the layer below. So that you can this see better, in the 3rd image below I lowered the opacity of the upper body layer so that you can to see the two images together at once (I look a bit like a ghost).

To finish there were a few details that needed to be clone stamped or patched to make everything seemless in the dress, but that was about it for the levitation effect.

So by adding two or more different images into one, you can create the most incredible effects. Give it a try and have some fun with it!

MY TIP FOR FURTHER READING

The Force of Nature

The Force of Nature

Every now and then I get questions from my beloved blog followers, Flickr contacts, and/or friends about how I did something, why I did another thing, what my inspiration was, if I got caught doing that incredibly embarrasing thing… And I now think it’s time to start my You ask, I tell! And it’s just as simple as it sounds. You ask. And I will tell. Hopefully not too many embarrasing things 🙂

First up is a question I got from Hanna Jakobsson, the amazingly charming author of the blog Fröken Jakobssons Vänner, who wonders

“What did you do with the leaves in the tree image?”

And I’m pretty sure she is referring to The Force of Nature and how I processed the image to create the effect of the tree.

To leave an exact description of how I edited the tree would make this post far too long and I don’t want to bore you to death. It involved a lot of blurring, curves, levels, saturation changes, brushing, masking, and a few textures. And since I’m all about the visual, I’ve decided to show the process in 16 images.

The difference may be hard to see between some of the images (especially since they are quite small), but it’s there. It might be e.g. the color or saturation of the leaves, the color of different parts of the trunk, or a vignette. And since this image is not only about the tree I included the entire process, also showing the processing of the girl (me). Also, take a look at To surrender to the Force of Nature for a Behind the Scenes of the same image.

To wear a dead bird’s wings…

To wear a dead bird’s wings…

Welcome to my very first Behind the Scenes! “Broken Wings” derives from a summer’s day when I was taking a walk and my eyes got caught on these semi-decomposed bird wings among the leaves on the ground. And my instinct was of course that I had to wear them! Even though they would only fit a person 40 cm tall…

dead, bird, wings, decomposed, rotten

But since I’m a very stubborn girl I resisted the terrible stench reeking out from them, poked sticks under the “armpits” of the post-bird, and walked around the forest to find a good location.

Luckily it didn’t take long before I ran into this tree stump. The stump was big enough to fit me in it and also it provided a good spot for a levitation trick. Even though the wings were broken I had to at least try to fly with them.

Below, I’ll take you through both the SHOOTING PROCESS and the PHOTOSHOP PROCESS

SHOOTING PROCESS

So I needed three shots to be able to create a girl with wings trying to fly from a tree stump.

1) THE UPPER BODY AND ARMS I put my camera on my tripod, climbed the stump and flung around it in different positions, shooting myself using my Canon RC-1 wireless remote control. Climbed back down, ran to the camera to check on the poses and angles, and ran back to the stump to create better ones. This kept on until I felt like I had been through a tough yoga session and I had a shot I was happy with.

2) THE LEGS To create that levitation look I needed to lift my legs off the stump, not touching it at all with my legs. So back up on the stump I let myself into the same position as in the shot I had chosen, held my body up with my arms and released the legs.

3) THE WINGS were a lot trickier since they were so small (and also very fragile and risked of falling apart any second). Still having the wings on sticks, I first tried to get the correct perspective by putting the wings in the proper place behind the stump with the aim to increase their size later on. Although, I wasn’t happy with the details so instead I tried to lift them in front of and close to the camera. For this part it is very important to keep the same focal length even if the subject is moved around. I was happy with these images and I was done shooting.

Let me make a note that all this was going on with people walking by… looking like they were going to call the police for them to come get that crazy bird woman running around in the woods with wings, looking like she would need a strait-jacket…

PHOTOSHOP PROCESS

In Photoshop I combined the two images of the girl in the forest by using the first shot as a main layer, masking over “the wrong legs” and letting through the levitated legs from underneath with some modifications.

After that I cut out one wing at a time, pasted them on the forest image, corrected their positions and angles and let the arms and body of the girl in front of the wings.

For me the story is sad and moody, so I wanted the tone and color of the final image to convey that feeling. I worked with blues and darks and decreasing the yellow in the greens. Some more tweaking and adjustments and VOILÀ!

BROKEN WINGS

Broken wings

A lot of work, full of aches, and marked as a crazy bird woman, but at least I got to wear a dead bird’s wings…
