‘THE PENDING STATE OF EXPECTING’

‘THE PENDING STATE OF EXPECTING’

(01)

I’m writing this in a haze…

A haze from sleepiness because now I’m a day overdue, and my body and mind have been ready day and night for weeks, for the wonder growing inside me to enter into this world.  A haze from marvel, worry, bliss, doubt, and hopefulness, all mixed up into one foggy existence about how it will all turn out. And when I look at this image, created (now what feels like so long ago) just a few of weeks after we got the big positive news that we were expecting, I realize we’re still in that pending state. It’s just a bit different.

“The big news came with an indescribable happiness. And an itch to see what the future would hold and an eagerness to make the very best of it all. Yet it took about 2 seconds before some sort of sense of protectiveness set in. And angst. And I started to wonder how to possibly move forward the best way, and what would lie ahead, especially when time went by sooo slowly. And if this all could possibly be true when it felt so utterly unreal. It was a bit like living and moving slowly forward in a dreamlike state. Being wide awake, but the world still feeling so surreal.”

This mix of feelings, both great and less enjoyable, made the head spin a bit and to me, who really likes control and to know what to expect from the future, it was a bit difficult to grasp. We talked a lot, me and Andreas, and we noticed that we shared very similar feelings. And that we knew that together we can always face anything and move forward no matter what lies ahead.

And so one very early summer’s morning, some might call it night, I woke him up to go for a drive to our nearby lake to visualize and capture the feeling of this pending state of expecting. To always remember this incredibly love filled, confusing, and wonderful time of life.

(02)

I’m still pending. Expecting.

Now at the other end of the same pregnancy, but in a very different physical state, I’m still pending. Expecting. Not knowing exactly how to move forward, and what will lie ahead. And I just have to realize it’s part of life.

And that I need to let go of that control and just trust that my body and mind will take care of it the way it’s meant to do. I, being a biologist academically, have to trust my thoughts telling me that my body was built to do this and it will probably work out alright. My mother did this 3 times. My grandmother Lilly did this 8 times, although unfortunately only 7 turned out truly well. And my great-grandmother did this no less than 12 times! That’s some heritage to carry.

And I surely will do my best to carry it well. And I truly hope that next time I’ll write you I will be more knowledgeable. And less pending. And certainly, a really happy mother.

Talk at Fotomässan 2015 – ‘THE ROAD TO CREATIVE IMAGES THAT EVOKES EMOTIONS’

~How to make your creative images more interesting~

The interest was greater than ever when I walked onto the big stage at Fotomässan Stockholm in November to talk about the road to creative images that evokes emotions, not only showing technique or surface. There were people as far as I could see (< 300) and the energy was amaaazing. Maybe I also got some extra umpf from the little baby inside my growing belly 🙂 Now you can watch the entire talk online (opens in a new window at Moderskeppet)!

Do you feel sometimes that your photos are looking good and are technically great, but they miss that little something extra…?
Do they really tell anything to anyone??
What can you do to make them feel more interesting and evoke more emotions, both for yourself and for your viewers?
And is there a good way to keep that inspiration flowing and not rely on chance?

The best part of it all is not only being able to share my passion and love for creative storytelling with so many people, but also the chats I get to have afterwards individually with you guys. The photo fair is such a great place to meet up with people you’ve only had the opportunity to write to online before, and it was truly awesome that a bunch took my advice from my newsletter and reached out beforehand that they were going to be there. So we decided to meet up and talk about our shared interests and I got to hear a bit about YOUR images and why YOU create. Also, I’m stoked about all the spontaneous chats from all you guys that were inspired by the talk who came by afterwards with so many fantastic questions and thoughts. I hope to meet you all next year again!

I hope you did/will do the challenge I gave you at the end of the speech?! If you did (I already got some fabulous images sent to me from people who did!), I would love to hear about it in the comments below this post and I’d love to give you my feedback.

‘HIDE AND SEEK’ – The story behind the portrait at Sandsjöbacka

‘HIDE AND SEEK’ – The story behind the portrait at Sandsjöbacka

South of Göteborg is a nature reserve we drive by

each time we go visit my parents-in-law. It’s right there next to the highway, stretching out in all its glory, a heathland making my mind go absolutely wild. I’ve been thinking about shooting there since 2009 when I started to pass it by when I met Andreas. This summer it was time… This is the story behind the portrait at Sandsjöbacka.

I remember sketching the idea out in the middle of a sleepless night. I snuck out of bed at about 2 or 3 am while Andreas was sleeping, snatching a notepad out of the dark on my way into the bathroom. Sitting there with bare legs on the cold tiles I wrote pages about a constant search through life, questions about truths not always visible, and actions taken.

Notes and sketch of concept

The story of ‘Hide and seek’ is heavily based on the transition I have done in life. Being part of my series ‘Parallels’, it carries the research I so often revisit in my work.

The idea is also heavily influenced by something I remember my grandmother say when I was a child…

“If you bring heather inside the house,
you bring death in with it.”

That old superstition was the foundation of this exact location and for me, a big part of this story.

Behind the Scenes of the shoot

To get to the location we had to park a couple of kilometers away and hike on one of the trails. Fortunately I’m blessed with the kindest most patient husband, and assistant, ever. So we took the photo gear we needed on our backs together with the shovel, and off we went. On the way there we passed through some truly lovely forests that I just have to go back and shoot in at another time. Maybe for a portrait of any of you out there?

Map and meadow | Sandsjöbacka

This was going to be a self-portrait, wearing one of my old business dresses that I wasn’t keen on hiking in. So getting my hair done beforehand, with a messy bun hinting that the woman had been at it for a while, was ok but I changed into my outfit when we had arrived.

Andreas on the hiking trail | Sandsjöbacka

When arriving at the heath we spent some time looking for the optimal spot to shoot at, with a great undisturbed view and where a lot of the beautiful heather could be seen. We didn’t have to look for that long. Since I had the entire image planned out beforehand, all that was needed was a quick change of clothes, some rigging, and then we got to it.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Hide and seek’

The shoot went quite smoothly even though we took our time to not stumble around destroying any of the heather.

And luckily it went quite fast, because the mosquitos were ruthless, as can be seen by taking a look at Andreas’s legs the day after.

Mosquito bites | Sandsjöbacka

But we both agree, that it surely was worth it.

Love,
Jenny

Music album cover art for Solala – stormy portraits in Göteborg

Music album cover art for Solala – stormy portraits in Göteborg

We had been waiting for that truly moody overcast autumn day, and when it came in October, we went out to the coastline outside Göteborg to shoot the music album cover art for Solala.

“Solala started by a kitchen table 2½ years ago and has since become an online phenomena with millions of YouTube views and a huge fan base. It was time for the release of their first album, Swedish Fishermen, and I got the honor and assignment to shoot their album art.”

Being from Göteborg the brief was to put this coastal band in their natural environment but at the same time to take their hallmark, the kitchen table, out to wherever they were. To create that blueish stormy feeling we went out really early one very rainy morning.

Although one of us slipped and fell, a table leg fell off, and loads of goose bumps… we had nailed the perfect set and we surely were a very happy crew! And it couldn’t have ended more magically then having coffee by the sea, and the guys treated me and Amanda (assistant) with a little private concert by bursting out singing their, by then not released, It’s gonna be me. To sit there out on that tiny island and just listen to the guys is something I could do all day 🙂

The graphic design of the album was done by fantastic Andreas Jacobsson of MOLLBYRÅN, and it was a really great collaboration.

Talk at Fotomässan – METHODS FOR CREATIVE IMAGE STORYTELLING

Create images with strong storytelling

I entered the big stage at Fotomässan Stockholm in November and you can now watch the entire talk online (opens in a new window at Moderskeppet)!

How do you tell a story in a creative image? Why is it important with a location scouting library, what symbolizes different colours in different cultures, and how can a single piece from nature build an entire story?

A big audience of about 300 joined me when I shared why and how image storytelling is so important and has gotten such a big place in my heart (and yes… you are correct… I was on the verge of tears there for a while…). I talked about 5 tools you can use to help you create and adapt your story. Lastly I gave you an exercise you can use if you find it difficult to get going with your own storytelling. And of course I couldn’t help to spice it up with some anecdotes from my photographic adventures as well!

Creating the story of a phoenix, and setting fire to a man

Creating the story of a phoenix, and setting fire to a man

“The phoenix hope, can wing her way through the desert skies, and still defying fortune’s spite; revive from ashes and rise.”*

When Anders came to me to tell his story through my portraits I got so excited. We had worked at the same office before, but I had no idea about the strong and gripping story surrounding his path through life. I feel so fortunate and honored to be one of those he wanted to open up for and to have been invited to hear the full story has truly enriched my own view of life. Hopefully, many more will get the opportunity to sit down with Anders and talk about his interesting life, and even more so, the fantastic transformation he is going through right now to come out a stronger person.

THE STORY OF A PHOENIX

The more he told me about his life the clearer it got that to me Anders is like a phoenix. Transforming in front of our very eyes, shedding his old life, rising from the ashes and coming out in all his splendour. Ready to take on the world again, to spread his wings and fly. Together we took this story and made it into that fabulous imaginative and a bit surreal reality we both are drawn to so much.

How to add fire to a person in Photoshop

SHOOTING, BARBECUING CLOTHES AND SETTING FIRE TO A MAN

So we threw ourselves into creating this image and after loads of conversation and planning to come up with this final vision we went out to the archipelago here outside Göteborg (Gothenburg). The evening was warm and still and we gave ourselves  proper time to do all we wanted to do. We had a marvelous picnic that Anders had made. We were barbecuing, not food, but clothes. We shot Anders for about 30 minutes and then we sat down on the warm cliffs and talked and talked watching the sun set.

Before any of you think I’m a terribly cruel person, setting fire to a man and pushing him off a cliff, I want to say that the whole shoot was safe. The clothes weren’t actually burning on Anders’s body, but instead the flames were added afterwards with some digital craftsmanship in Photoshop from frames that I took with burning and glowing fabric. “No men were harmed in this photography session” 😉

“ALL THE PREPARATION”

Since Anders seemed to have such a wonderful time through all of the process creating this portrait, later on I asked him what he found the very most fun part of it all. And it was so great to hear that he had enjoyed immensely the whole preparation phase, planning everything and the time we met up to tear up his clothes, and then later going into the photography day. And well… I couldn’t agree with him more 🙂

‘THE BURDEN’ – a portrait of unrealistic beauty ideals

‘THE BURDEN’ – a portrait of unrealistic beauty ideals

THE BURDEN
This is not a portrait of a girl.
This is a portrait of all girls, who are suffering under warped expectations.
A portrait of the burden of unrealistic ideals.

View in full size here

the BACKGROUND

I’ve kept this place in the back of my mind for two years. At my first encounter I was blown away by it’s beauty and knew I had to make a portrait here one day. But I wasn’t prepared. And as we all know, the cherry blossom don’t last for too long. And when it’s gone, of course another year has to pass on by…

April came again. On my way from a meeting I took a detour to this park with my bicycle to check it out once more, and I got the exact same feeling again. Still I had no specific story in mind, but I felt a sudden urge to just go ahead and do something spontaneous. I started to ask around on my Facebook page for someone to model for me on short notice and Amanda, who is now attending the same photography school I did, volunteered. The timeframe was short, but with the wise words “GO JUST GO” as a tagline we jumped right at it.

the STORY

It so happened that Amanda only a few days earlier had posted a self made short film on YouTube that truly struck a cord with me. It’s called “För mycket hud i pannan” (in English “Too much skin in the forehead”) and is a very personal, very strong, message from Amanda about the effect the distorted beauty ideals can have on young women of today. But also about choice, willpower, and to be totally fed up with it. An issue that I, as so many others, have a personal relation to and feel very strongly about.

beauty ideals,

Sketching on the story for the image I couldn’t help but get inspired by Amanda’s story. It trickled down into my own tale, starting to crystallize a story about the price for the strive of beauty. In Japan, cherry blossoms are a true metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life. They bloom out with such extreme beauty, and then they die within a few days, the petals floating like snowflakes to the ground. With this phenomenon and symbolism as a base the idea of a girl, or rather an entity, heavily weighed down by her task, started to form.

“To me, this image is a comment about beauty ideals, the pressure from the world around us, and the toll it’s taking to keep up appearances. But also, in this image lies a bit of hope, that the burden of unrealistic ideals one day will be lifted by our collective choice and willpower. Maybe even defeated.”

the PREPARATIONS

We decided to shoot the image just three days after me first bringing it up, not to risk the flowers to disappear. On the question of how early in the morning Amanda could imagine to come to the location her answer was “Everything for the arts – as early as needed”. Oh how I just love that attitude!

The day before the shoot I  set the alarm to 05.30, grabbed my bike and went to check how the light looked at this hour. The light was how I wanted it to, but it was absolutely freezing cold and I was a bit worried that Amanda would be really uncomfortable with sitting still in a thin dress in that cold morning air. But again, Amanda just laughed at me worrying. And her enthusiasm couldn’t make more excited.

I also spent the day asking around for an old painter’s ladder, and happily, getting hold of one by the kindness of my former teacher Kalle. I also looked up a recipe for home made, environmental friendly… and hopefully more skin friendly… paint and went at it. It actually turned out better than expected! Creating my own paint bucket out of a strawberry jam container, going back and forth across town to get hold of the ladder, ironing the dress, packing some warm socks and a blanket… and we were good to go.

the (quite cold) SESSION

cherry blossom, Göteborg

The shoot itself went very smoothly. Amanda was such a trooper in that dress, even with me splashing cold wet paint all over her and treating her like a baby, pulling ragg socks on and off of her bare feet to try to keep her warm between set ups.

It all took about 30 minutes from rigging the equipment until it was packed again, and then Amanda surely was well deserved to change into something more comfortable. Even though her skin to some extent was still covered in that, now dried up, pink paint… But she was still smiling 🙂

good work deserves a GREAT BREAKFAST

After the portrait was shot we went to the fantastic nearby, american diner inspired, Egg & Milk for breakfast and we spent a couple of absolutely great hours of chatting about hopes and dreams, upcoming shoots, and most things in life.

It’s so fascinating when you connect so strongly with someone you just met, forgetting about time, and just keep on talking about and sharing passions. It was such a lovely morning and I truly hope we get to do that again some day Amanda!

And I hope the good people of Egg & Milk forgave the strange pink stains we possibly left in the restroom…

Amanda Falkman is also a very gifted photographer with an interesting career on her way. Check out her work here and for Pete’s sake… GIVE AMANDA SOME LOVE for her participation in this portrait!

The making of the fashion editorial ‘END OF LINE’ in Unfolded Magazine

The making of the fashion editorial ‘END OF LINE’ in Unfolded Magazine

I’m excited to present to you the editorial ‘End of line’ (larger images), created for the fashion collection made by designer Emelie Arvidsson and published in the London magazine Unfolded Magazine. After the successful collaboration with the fashion story for Emelie’s previous collection ‘The space that is and isn’t’ the aim was to create a new story, strong on its own but with an alluding connection between the two collections.

BtS, Behind the Scenes, fashion, editorial, conceptual, Modellink, futuristic, mode, Göteborg, Emelie Arvidsson

CONCEPTUAL BRIEF AND PLANNING

Two months before the planned shoot I met up with Emelie over a cup of coffee to talk through the background of the collection, discuss the brief and to settle on a creative goal. Emelie showed me the artistic development for her concept and we talked through inspirations and important things to highlight.

The focus of the collection is lines that are a fundamental part of visual perception and Emelie’s aim was to investigate the dynamics of straight lines through experimental construction of dress. It is obvious how lines are a crucial part of the construction and the striving and direction is truly important. I picked up on Emelie’s explanation that line compositions can provide strong dynamics given it’s put in relation to body and movement and I wanted to incorporate that into the story.

moodboard, BtS, Behind the Scenes, fashion, editorial, conceptual, futuristic, mode, Göteborg, Emelie Arvidsson

Emelie’s moodboard

The brief had similar grounds as for the previous ‘The space that is and isn’t’ project and a futuristic setting with clear visual space/void, concrete/asphalt and strong shape was once again incorporated into the moodboard. Playing with the name of the collection, ‘End of line’, investigation of the dynamics of straight lines continues through the editorial, transferring the collection and the story into the futuristic setting that alludes to what inspired the collection. Bringing the characters and clothes into a somewhat post-apocalyptic setting, the search for the end of line continues.

The editorial was published in Unfolded Magazine – Issue 16, 2013 where my spread is on pages 10-19.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF PREP AND SHOOT

After thorough location scouting and scetching and approving image ideas, the fantastic team met up early one summer morning for prep and make-up before taking off to the old abandoned airfield of ‘Torslanda gamla flygfält’, just outside Gothenburg (Göteborg):

For the story, a harsh sun leaving no mercy for the long walk ahead, was what I wished for so I was really pleased with the weather that day. Especially considering that you can never be sure what our west coast city will bring. Although, it was windy as usual, but of course we were prepared with cover ups to resist the cold. While the girls were preparing the final things before the first part of the shoot….

The story begins with the two characters leaving a city, now completely abandoned and empty, on their journey searching for the end of line. For the first image we wanted a bit of a birds eye view, later on making the city visible in the far distance. I must say I’m no fan of heights or ladders, but by getting absorbed by shooting I completely forgot about my fears and instead I was having a lovely time up there.

The result of the day, and thereafter the many many hours of image processing behind the computer to enhance and convey the story we had planned for, has gotten such a wonderful response and I’m so grateful of the team, together making it all happen. I surely hope you will like our fashion story!

Behind the Scenes – ‘THE STORM STARTER’

Behind the Scenes – ‘THE STORM STARTER’

A late summers day I gathered a fantastic team to make an image for my conceptual portrait series ‘Parallels’. I had been inspired by Rania’s (previous studio portrait) dreadlocks and her dark features for some time…

…I wanted to create a portrait alluding to greek mythology characters and their features, like Medusa and her hair and the sirens and their manipulative powers. Being from the windy southwestern parts of Sweden the image was created on the concept of the ocean and storm, and the power to control it.

Martina got the task of keeping Rania’s natural beauty but at the same time turn her into a vicious sea creature. I had the task of making Ranias dreads stand up like they were floating and moving by her powers. To do this I needed to twist steel wires round every one of her approx. 40 dreadlocks and then sew sewing threads to the tips that we later connected to a wire ring crafted by Andreas.

We attached the wire ring to a long stick that Andreas used to lift up the dreadlocks above Rania’s head. Thank you so much Andreas, for patiently performing the odd task of standing out in the cold wind holding a stick attached to hair.

‘The sentence’ is part of my series ‘Parallels’ and was shot in Sälen, Sweden. We were there on a skiing holiday with my family, but being me I just couldn’t let this breathtaking landscape be out there without being photographed.

The cold got me thinking about for how little time you would actually survive out there without any cover or extra warmth. And this story came to me about an entity, light as snow but with a deadly darkness, executing a sentence leading to certain death.

It was oh so cold outside (about -15° Celsius) so to be standing still or to take off your protective clothing was not a nice experience. So the day before the shoot I planned the story carefully, making my doodle sketches with the composition, placement of the woman and in what direction she should be releasing her butterfly.

On the day of the shoot we set out to find the right location. I wasn’t completely happy with the first test shoot location so we went higher up on the mountain and found this desolate vast expanse of snow. The sun was shining while setting up, Andreas being very helpful in letting me know when I was at the planned position, but before I even got my protective clothes off the clear weather changed to overcast. And actually, I liked the mysterious feeling that was created in the shift. All the planning in the world can’t master the weather so instead I let the story form around what was provided.

I hope you enjoy the portrait!

PS. I must say this hot chocolate and waffle treat was well deserved after getting back into a warm house!
