Project published in book ‘INTERNATIONAL FLORAL ART 2016/2017’

When starting our collaborative journey together last year,

florist Sissel Willbro and I didn’t know where our creativity would take us. We knew we aimed at getting published in book International Floral Art 2016/2017, and that we wanted to deal with a subject very close to heart.

The project grew into highlighting the daily balancing act and struggle of young women between their own emotional integrity and the constant threat of falling for a skewed medial and distorted everyday pressure. The perishable organic plant arrangements are used to symbolize the fragile balance, and they merge with stories in the surreal worlds of my photographs to illustrate the mental landscape.

And now I’m happy to say, we are published in the book we aimed for (link to book):

With 304 pages of the most striking floral arrangements, the International Floral Art 2016/2017 is another exceptional tribute to the wonders of floral art. An absolute favourite of many, the International Floral Art series has become an essential resource, reflecting the diverse and ever-evolving floral art scene. Over 200 international artists, both up-and-coming as well-established designers, sent in their best designs. It accounts for the extraordinary diversity and the refreshing mix of arrangements in this volume.

Packed with artful and inventive new designs and showcasing many contemporary styles and techniques, this is a must-have for anyone interested in floral art, from those with fingers itching to create, to those who just want to stand back and admire the incredible talents of others.

A massive THANKS to the wonderful women involved in the project so far. How impossible it would have been without you. You are OH so incredible. <3

Talk at Fotomässan 2015 – ‘THE ROAD TO CREATIVE IMAGES THAT EVOKES EMOTIONS’

~How to make your creative images more interesting~

The interest was greater than ever when I walked onto the big stage at Fotomässan Stockholm in November to talk about the road to creative images that evokes emotions, not only showing technique or surface. There were people as far as I could see (< 300) and the energy was amaaazing. Maybe I also got some extra umpf from the little baby inside my growing belly 🙂 Now you can watch the entire talk online (opens in a new window at Moderskeppet)!

Do you feel sometimes that your photos are looking good and are technically great, but they miss that little something extra…?
Do they really tell anything to anyone??
What can you do to make them feel more interesting and evoke more emotions, both for yourself and for your viewers?
And is there a good way to keep that inspiration flowing and not rely on chance?

The best part of it all is not only being able to share my passion and love for creative storytelling with so many people, but also the chats I get to have afterwards individually with you guys. The photo fair is such a great place to meet up with people you’ve only had the opportunity to write to online before, and it was truly awesome that a bunch took my advice from my newsletter and reached out beforehand that they were going to be there. So we decided to meet up and talk about our shared interests and I got to hear a bit about YOUR images and why YOU create. Also, I’m stoked about all the spontaneous chats from all you guys that were inspired by the talk who came by afterwards with so many fantastic questions and thoughts. I hope to meet you all next year again!

I hope you did/will do the challenge I gave you at the end of the speech?! If you did (I already got some fabulous images sent to me from people who did!), I would love to hear about it in the comments below this post and I’d love to give you my feedback.

Live TV interview for Kamera & Bild at Fotomässan 2015 – ‘CREATIVE PORTRAITS WITH JENNY JACOBSSON’

A very pregnant and happy me was interviewed directly from the tv studio in the fair hall at Fotomässan (Photo Fair) 2015 by Kamera & Bild about how I work with my creative and imaginative portraits.

Fotomässan Stockholm is the biggest photo event of the year in the Nordic countries and Kamera & Bild interviewed fantastic photographers like nature photographer Mattias Klum, Pieter ten Hoopen, Emma Svensson (Rockfoto-Emma), LisaLove, and Sophie Odelberg. They were also showing the latest technique, and discussing photo trends. See my live TV interview above and check out the other interviews at Kamera & Bild.

I was invited to do 2 different talks during the event and the other one is a talk at the big stage for Moderskeppet on ‘The road to creative images that evokes emotions’. You can watch it here!

“PORTRAITS IN ANOTHER WORLD
Jenny Jacobsson swapped a career as a DNA analyst to one as a portrait photographer. But she shoots no ordinary portraits. Instead her images holds stories and dreams that have been developed in close cooperation with the person being portrayed. The result is often not just an image but also a friendship.”

I’m so thrilled to see this wonderful and comprehensive article about me and my photographic work in KAMERA & BILD, one of, if not the, biggest photography magazines in Sweden. It is released today in every well-stocked store with magazine.

This issue’s theme is Portraits, and is focusing on what makes a portrait good, how to think as a photographer when creating it, and gives tips about how to develop yourself together with your portrait images. I’m honored to be one of the professionals they asked to give my point of view.

The interview was done last month by reporter Ola Jacobsen and I want to give a shout out to Ola for such a nice collab! Above is the headline and introductory of the article.

Here it is, the golden book. Shining and glittering on my desktop this morning and I’m happy to say I’m published in “Best of the best photographers 2014”. As they state themselves, it contains the finest images in One Eyeland of 2014, chiseled from a raw material of over 107 000 photographs down to 191… And I’m in there. I take off my hat, and bow.

We chase photographers from seven corners of the world. We tempt them, taunt them, badger them and sweet talk them into sharing their dearest images with us. Applying a ruthless filter called ‘exacting standards’, we then handpick the ‘Best of the Best Photographers’. The One Eyeland Book Volume 4 is an inspiring compilation of this crème de la crème. Melted from a mighty corpus of 107 000 uploaded pictures, and forged from a staggering shortlist of 24 500 images, the golden collection is a showcase of 191 scintillating photographs worthy of the yellow metal.”
Sharad Haksar, Founder of One Eyeland

Talk at Fotomässan – METHODS FOR CREATIVE IMAGE STORYTELLING

Talk at Fotomässan – METHODS FOR CREATIVE IMAGE STORYTELLING

Create images with strong storytelling

I entered the big stage at Fotomässan Stockholm in November and you can now watch the entire talk online (opens in a new window at Moderskeppet)!

How do you tell a story in a creative image? Why is it important with a location scouting library, what symbolizes different colours in different cultures, and how can a single piece from nature build an entire story?

A big audience of about 300 joined me when I shared why and how image storytelling is so important and has gotten such a big place in my heart (and yes… you are correct… I was on the verge of tears there for a while…). I talked about 5 tools you can use to help you create and adapt your story. Lastly I gave you an exercise you can use if you find it difficult to get going with your own storytelling. And of course I couldn’t help to spice it up with some anecdotes from my photographic adventures as well!

Interview and feature for Moderskeppet – Behind the creative work

“In photographer Jenny Jacobson’s head fits lots of amazing stories, both her own but also others. Stories that come to life in photos after careful planning, photo shooting, and creative image processing. Jenny is an image narrator who fascinates and arouses emotions…

What are her thoughts about her creativity?”

That’s the description for the interview made by Moderskeppet last week. Through the interview I got to think about questions that I believe would be useful for every photographer to contemplate every now and then. Join me and get Behind the Scenes of my parallell worlds! In the spotlight of ‘f11 Magazine’ – 27 page feature and interview

“Jenny Jacobsson is a Swedish photographer from the city of Gothenburg. Her mission is to create a narrative, using expressive and emotional imagery. From concept, through construction, capture and post production, her images hint at stories where the impossible really does becomes possible. It’s a far cry from her previous work in neurobiology and the satisfying result of a decision to follow her heart and embrace her passion for creating conceptual imagery.
Jenny Jacobsson – Storyteller

Tim Steele

That is the description for the big feature and interview in f11 Magazine, written by publisher and creative director Tim Steele. I’m so happy to have been given the opportunity to be part of this amazing magazine written all the way from the other side of the globe, in New Zealand. In this October issue the magazine covers images taken from all across Australia (winning work from AIPP APPA Awards 2014), to the desert in southern Africa (Joshua Holko), finding its way to the northern climes of my home in Scandinavia, reflecting the global approach by f11. And it’s exciting!

Some of my favorite interview questions from the feature is

• Your subjects obviously inspire you to tell their stories, but what external sources also influence or inspire you?
• I see strong conceptual pre-visualisation in the creation of your images, does the idea always survive the migration to the capture process?

If it’s hard to read from the images, read the full 27 page feature and interview here:

• View in browser…

Issue 37 | October 2014 , page 94-120

I want to give a shout-out to Tim Steele, for being such a nice person and a terrific editor to work with. Thank you!

Book cover published for Fannie Flagg

Book cover published for Fannie Flagg

Do you remember the incredibly popular movie (and book) “Fried Green Tomatoes (at the Whistle Stop Cafe)”? I certainly do since it was one of my favorite movies growing up and the incredible story about friendship and strong women has always had a special place in my heart.

The american author Fannie Flagg recently released a new book called “The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion” and when the Italian publishing house Rizzoli Publications asked me if I wanted my image to be the book cover for the Italian version, I jumped up and down out of excitement!

Voli acrobatici e pattini a rotelle, Fannie Flagg, Rizzoli, retro, vintage, gas station

Voli acrobatici e pattini a rotelle, Fannie Flagg, Rizzoli, retro, vintage, gas station

The cover image is one of the portraits from my series ‘Parallels‘. A big part of my work process is the inspiration that I draw from a particular location. Passing by this old gas station made my heart jump and thump and this little story evolved in my mind. I just had to make this shot! Bringing a 50’s inspired dress of mine I went back there with Andreas as assistant and after half an hour of shooting, and lots of cars passing by real close (as always I wonder what they thought…), this retro fashion inspired shot was done.

This image is proof that if you get that special feeling in your gut for a place, don’t hesitate to go at it. I’m happy to say that this image is one of the most appreciated as an art print from me. If you are interested or curious about getting this image or any other, check out my Prints section on my website and don’t hesitate to contact me.

Want to read the book? Go here if you want to buy it on Amazon.com in Italian, or if you want it in English (not my cover).

The making of the fashion editorial ‘END OF LINE’ in Unfolded Magazine

The making of the fashion editorial ‘END OF LINE’ in Unfolded Magazine

I’m excited to present to you the editorial ‘End of line’ (larger images), created for the fashion collection made by designer Emelie Arvidsson and published in the London magazine Unfolded Magazine. After the successful collaboration with the fashion story for Emelie’s previous collection ‘The space that is and isn’t’ the aim was to create a new story, strong on its own but with an alluding connection between the two collections.

BtS, Behind the Scenes, fashion, editorial, conceptual, Modellink, futuristic, mode, Göteborg, Emelie Arvidsson

CONCEPTUAL BRIEF AND PLANNING

Two months before the planned shoot I met up with Emelie over a cup of coffee to talk through the background of the collection, discuss the brief and to settle on a creative goal. Emelie showed me the artistic development for her concept and we talked through inspirations and important things to highlight.

The focus of the collection is lines that are a fundamental part of visual perception and Emelie’s aim was to investigate the dynamics of straight lines through experimental construction of dress. It is obvious how lines are a crucial part of the construction and the striving and direction is truly important. I picked up on Emelie’s explanation that line compositions can provide strong dynamics given it’s put in relation to body and movement and I wanted to incorporate that into the story.

moodboard, BtS, Behind the Scenes, fashion, editorial, conceptual, futuristic, mode, Göteborg, Emelie Arvidsson

Emelie’s moodboard

The brief had similar grounds as for the previous ‘The space that is and isn’t’ project and a futuristic setting with clear visual space/void, concrete/asphalt and strong shape was once again incorporated into the moodboard. Playing with the name of the collection, ‘End of line’, investigation of the dynamics of straight lines continues through the editorial, transferring the collection and the story into the futuristic setting that alludes to what inspired the collection. Bringing the characters and clothes into a somewhat post-apocalyptic setting, the search for the end of line continues.

The editorial was published in Unfolded Magazine – Issue 16, 2013 where my spread is on pages 10-19.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF PREP AND SHOOT

After thorough location scouting and scetching and approving image ideas, the fantastic team met up early one summer morning for prep and make-up before taking off to the old abandoned airfield of ‘Torslanda gamla flygfält’, just outside Gothenburg (Göteborg):

For the story, a harsh sun leaving no mercy for the long walk ahead, was what I wished for so I was really pleased with the weather that day. Especially considering that you can never be sure what our west coast city will bring. Although, it was windy as usual, but of course we were prepared with cover ups to resist the cold. While the girls were preparing the final things before the first part of the shoot….

The story begins with the two characters leaving a city, now completely abandoned and empty, on their journey searching for the end of line. For the first image we wanted a bit of a birds eye view, later on making the city visible in the far distance. I must say I’m no fan of heights or ladders, but by getting absorbed by shooting I completely forgot about my fears and instead I was having a lovely time up there.

Johan did a great job with directing the light with the reflector and Linnea and Emelie were constantly on their toes, trying to fight the effect of the wind on hair and make-up.

The result of the day, and thereafter the many many hours of image processing behind the computer to enhance and convey the story we had planned for, has gotten such a wonderful response and I’m so grateful of the team, together making it all happen. I surely hope you will like our fashion story!
