You are visiting a conceptual photographer and digital artist, specializing in fashion, portrait, and commercial photography. I love to create narrative, expressive and emotional imagery that make people feel that the impossible is possible. I'm an image constructor, meticulously crafting all details to often form realistic surrealism. At the age of 31 I completely changed my life. I had spent 10 years within the academic world, getting a Master of Science within neurobiology and working at a DNA analysis company, when I decided to follow my heart and passion instead. I left my old career behind, and embraced the world of imagery by attending school for Professional Photography (Fotoskolan Göteborg). And I've never looked back. I have a never-ending urge to come up with and tell stories through my photographs and am certainly drawn to cinematic imagery. I often get highly inspired by the location itself when building alternative stories to sceneries that goes hand-in-hand with the concept and styling. Growing up on the Swedish countryside open landscapes, woods, and nature were always present and I've always loved the magic of a wild scenery. Also, my mind has always flourished inside great novels or being enchanted by movies. It is now obvious that my artwork is highly inspired by my childhood experiences, making me romanticize and dramatize my environment and put fantasies into the frame. The landscape is a returning location for my stories and I want to capture the natural beauty of a place but with my own twist. I like to highlight the hidden charm of an, at first sight, ordinary place. I am currently working as a freelance photographer, available for commissions and assignments. Also, I am continuously shooting my fine-art series "Parallels". I reside in Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden, with my husband and graphic designer Andreas. I work on location without boundaries.

‘SHE WALKS WITH COLOURS’ – Changing summer into autumn

“When Rania showed me the dress I knew instantly where to shoot her portrait. I had been walking by this forest path so many times, loving it but knowing that this place required a medieval or fantasy theme. And oh how that theme suits Rania.“

The dress have been in Rania’s possession for quite some time and it means something special. We had been talking about capturing a story for her with her dress for a while and suddenly we felt a sense of urgency. Why wait and not take the opportunity to capture the memory of a beloved garment, representing a special time in life that might never come back?

Also, Rania’s hair is a true symbol of this time, right now. Her dreadlocks feel so natural with her and her personality, and hair can truly be a strong expression of identity. Who knows what will happen. Some day the dreads and the dress will be gone. Why not immortalize them now and keep the memory of this time intact forever?

“The story took a while to develop, but when finalized, it feels so right, natural and obvious. Rania is a true autumn lover. Her whole appearance goes hand in hand with that wonderful time of year. And when that time appears, she truly shines.”

I still can’t help but get a huge grin on my face when thinking about the discussion we had when Rania almost… aaaaalmost… convinced me that autumn IS better than summer. And oh, I love my summer time…

So the hair, the dress, the location, the theme, the season, it all came together. Rania, with an essence of nature, of warm tones, of heart and spirit and earthiness. A person who spreads warmth and colour to everyone around her. Here it is. ‘She walks with colours’.

5 essential questions as photographers – Artist talk at Fotoskolan Göteborg

I was invited to do an artist talk at Photography School Gothenburg (Fotoskolan Göteborg) yesterday and together we wrote down answers to five questions. When working and living as a photographer sometimes it can be difficult to try to stay true to your own visions and keep your creative pride, thinking that you need to create something else because you feel pressured to. I strongly believe that if you are not true to your own creative vision and pride, you will soon start to resent the work that you used to absolutely love. And also, I’m a firm believer that as long as YOU love what you create, there will be lots of others out there that do as well.

“To remind ourselves what we actually love about photography, and also to keep pushing ourselves to do even better, be even better, we ask ourselves these questions. Questions that we can go back to and rethink over the years, in constant evolution, to move forward, but still remind ourselves of where our true love for photography once started and what our core values are for the images we create.“

WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? | Remind yourself of that magic moment, or those magic images, that ones pushed you to start shooting.

THINK OF 3 THINGS THAT YOU LOVE IN AN IMAGE | Try to as often as possible incorporate those 3 things in your own images, to keep your voice and to create consistancy in your work. May it be a color, a subject, a location, an emotion, a genre…

IF YOU HAD NO LIMITATIONS, WHAT WOULD YOU PHOTOGRAPH? | If money or relying on others were no issue, what would you create? Is there anything you can do, right now, that can make you go out and shoot something similar, or even more awesome?

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE BETTER AT/STRENGHTEN YOUR PORTFOLIO WITH? | As photographers we need to constantly evolve and push ourselves. Right now, what can you do to evolve?

AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR DAYS DOING? | Working as a photographer, we do not only pick up our cameras and photograph all day long. We need a focus as a business and spend our days creating more than photographs. For you, do you want to be hired by a company, sell prints, do exhibitions, do assignments, write a book, work for a magazine, teach…?

Behind the Scenes of ‘SEEKING NEVERLAND’ – a sister portrait session

“The strong bonds of sisterhood inspired the sisters Kristin and Ellinor and myself to go into the forest one sunny summer’s day. We wanted to capture moments that speaks of memories and closeness between sisters, and combine that with celebrating the imagination and innocence of a time past.”

This is a tribute to all of you that at some point were split between adulthood luring in the distance, and at the same time didn’t want to grow up. That found comfort in the idea of a never-ending childhood, protecting you from the world beyond. To you who let your mind be occupied with imagination and dreams of magical, more exciting worlds filled with adventure and innocence.

“This is a reminder that that magical place is still out there. It is never too late to visit that fantasy land, protecting you, even for a little while. This is to you, who is Seeking Neverland.”

The making of the fashion editorial ‘END OF LINE’ in Unfolded Magazine

I’m excited to present to you the editorial ‘End of line’ (larger images), created for the fashion collection made by designer Emelie Arvidsson and published in the London magazine Unfolded Magazine. After the successful collaboration with the fashion story for Emelie’s previous collection ‘The space that is and isn’t’ the aim was to create a new story, strong on its own but with an alluding connection between the two collections.

CONCEPTUAL BRIEF AND PLANNING

Two months before the planned shoot I met up with Emelie over a cup of coffee to talk through the background of the collection, discuss the brief and to settle on a creative goal. Emelie showed me the artistic development for her concept and we talked through inspirations and important things to highlight.

The focus of the collection is lines that are a fundamental part of visual perception and Emelie’s aim was to investigate the dynamics of straight lines through experimental construction of dress. It is obvious how lines are a crucial part of the construction and the striving and direction is truly important. I picked up on Emelie’s explanation that line compositions can provide strong dynamics given it’s put in relation to body and movement and I wanted to incorporate that into the story.

The brief had similar grounds as for the previous ‘The space that is and isn’t’ project and a futuristic setting with clear visual space/void, concrete/asphalt and strong shape was once again incorporated into the moodboard. Playing with the name of the collection, ‘End of line’, investigation of the dynamics of straight lines continues through the editorial, transferring the collection and the story into the futuristic setting that alludes to what inspired the collection. Bringing the characters and clothes into a somewhat post-apocalyptic setting, the search for the end of line continues.

The editorial was published in Unfolded Magazine – Issue 16, 2013 where my spread is on pages 10-19.

After thorough location scouting and scetching and approving image ideas, the fantastic team met up early one summer morning for prep and make-up before taking off to the old abandoned airfield of ‘Torslanda gamla flygfält’, just outside Gothenburg (Göteborg):

For the story, a harsh sun leaving no mercy for the long walk ahead, was what I wished for so I was really pleased with the weather that day. Especially considering that you can never be sure what our west coast city will bring. Although, it was windy as usual, but of course we were prepared with cover ups to resist the cold. While the girls were preparing the final things before the first part of the shoot….

The story begins with the two characters leaving a city, now completely abandoned and empty, on their journey searching for the end of line. For the first image we wanted a bit of a birds eye view, later on making the city visible in the far distance. I must say I’m no fan of heights or ladders, but by getting absorbed by shooting I completely forgot about my fears and instead I was having a lovely time up there.

Johan did a great job with directing the light with the reflector and Linnea and Emelie were constantly on their toes, trying to fight the effect of the wind on hair and make-up.

The result of the day, and thereafter the many many hours of image processing behind the computer to enhance and convey the story we had planned for, has gotten such a wonderful response and I’m so grateful of the team, together making it all happen. Behind the Scenes – ‘THE STORM STARTER’

A late summers day I gathered a fantastic team to make an image for my conceptual portrait series ‘Parallels’. I had been inspired by Rania’s (previous studio portrait) dreadlocks and her dark features for some time…

“…I wanted to create a portrait alluding to greek mythology characters and their features, like Medusa and her hair and the sirens and their manipulative powers. Being from the windy southwestern parts of Sweden the image was created on the concept of the ocean and storm, and the power to control it.“

Martina got the task of keeping Rania’s natural beauty but at the same time turn her into a vicious sea creature. I had the task of making Ranias dreads stand up like they were floating and moving by her powers. To do this I needed to twist steel wires round every one of her approx. 40 dreadlocks and then sew sewing threads to the tips that we later connected to a wire ring crafted by Andreas.

We attached the wire ring to a long stick that Andreas used to lift up the dreadlocks above Rania’s head. Thank you so much Andreas, for patiently performing the odd task of standing out in the cold wind holding a stick attached to hair.

‘The sentence’ is part of my series ‘Parallels’ and was shot in Sälen, Sweden. We were there on a skiing holiday with my family, but being me I just couldn’t let this breathtaking landscape be out there without being photographed.

“The cold got me thinking about for how little time you would actually survive out there without any cover or extra warmth. And this story came to me about an entity, light as snow but with a deadly darkness, executing a sentence leading to certain death.“

It was oh so cold outside (about -15° Celsius) so to be standing still or to take off your protective clothing was not a nice experience. So the day before the shoot I planned the story carefully, making my doodle sketches with the composition, placement of the woman and in what direction she should be releasing her butterfly.

On the day of the shoot we set out to find the right location. I wasn’t completely happy with the first test shoot location so we went higher up on the mountain and found this desolate vast expanse of snow. The sun was shining while setting up, Andreas being very helpful in letting me know when I was at the planned position, but before I even got my protective clothes off the clear weather changed to overcast. And actually, I liked the mysterious feeling that was created in the shift. All the planning in the world can’t master the weather so instead I let the story form around what was provided.

Inspiration from the fashion show of Borås Textilhögskola – EXIT13

Yesterday the journey went to Borås for the fantastic fashion show and exhibition of the textile and fashion graduate design students of Borås Textilhögskola. Not only did I want to support and get a close look at the newest work of Emelie Arvidsson (the extraordinary designer that I shot for last year), but going to events like this is reeeeally good for inspiration for your shoots. Also, it’s a great opportunity to get to see all the amazing talent that are present in your vicinity. And who knows, maybe you’ll find a great new collaborator! I know for sure there are a couple of designers here that really spark my interest… When I got back home I just had to take out my notebook and doodle down all the ideas I got during the night. Hopefully there could be something in there for the future.

But most of all, I’m truly stoked that I’m shooting the new collection “End of line” of Emelie Arvidsson next week! So stay tuned and follow me on my social media because soon we promise to try to blow your minds!

When Phlearn (my favorite site for photography and photoshop based knowledge) had its biggest contest ever I just had to enter. And guess what…. I won!

One of the reasons I chose to enter was in fact due to the jury, consisiting of some of my absolute favorite photographers that consistently inspire me; Brooke Shaden, Miss Aniela, Dean Bradshaw, and of course Aaron Nace himself (the creator and host of Phlearn). It’s so cool that they chose my image out of all the amazing and great entries.

I won amazing prices worth over $1,000. I received:

Conceptual fashion shoot for designer Emelie Arvidsson

One of the highlights for me last year was shooting the fashion collection “The space that is and isn’t” for the amazing designer Emelie Arvidsson. Emelie contacted me for my conceptual and storytelling work and asked for an image concept that really was going to bring out the strong story and idea of her designs. The editorial got published by Papercut Magazine. 

Brief Conceptual, artistic, storytelling, “alienesc”, futuristic, space/void, silence, sculptural, surface, light concrete, strong shape…

The biggest challenge was to find the perfect location suiting the brief. We wanted to shoot in Göteborg (Gothenburg) and the city is not especially famous for its “light concrete” architecture… I scanned through all of town, going back and forth on my bicycle with one hand on the handlebars and the other holding my camera, viewing all modern architecture, visiting recent roadwork, climbing under bridges to look at the abutments, etc. And then, suddenly, it hit me. I knew the perfect spot. I’ve been there so many times without just thinking about it in this manner. It was right there, under (or perhaps better described as above) my nose. Once I showed it to Emelie, we both knew we had our location.

INSPIRATION FOR IMAGE CREATORS – Internship at Cooper & Gorfer

As a photographer, or any image maker, you can choose to sit around waiting for inspiration to pop up by itself. Personally, I’m a firm believer that feeling inspired is a state of mind you can teach yourself to find when you need it. So, what can we do to get started? I’m gathering and sharing my methods and favorite creators as a resource to help keeping our inspirational juices flowing. And I invite you along for this series of “INSPIRATION FOR IMAGE CREATORS”!

The very last thing we do at Fotoskolan Göteborg (Photo school Gothenburg) is 6 months of internship. When Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer (Cooper & Gorfer) stepped into our class room for a lecture at the beginning of our education I fell straight away for their amazing imagery and striking personalities. Taking me away to a far away place, both geographically and imaginary. Their images, that I would explain as a mix between photography and painting, tell stories that instantly made me feel that I wanted… needed… to do my internship with them.

Luckily for me, they wanted me as well. I’m so excited to try to pull my weight by their side and I’m sure these upcoming 6 months will rock!
